This vegetarian sushi recipe is more of a tutorial to get you started. Once you get through a few practice sessions, sushi makes an incredibly easy vegan dish for a snack, dinner or addition to your next pot luck.
Sea vegetables are packed with minerals, and the nori sheets used in making sushi are a tasty way to get his highly nutritious food into your diet.
This recipe will serve 4 people as a main dish.
Vegetarian Sushi Recipe Ingredients
* 1 cup short grain brown rice
* 1-2 Tbsp brown rice or apple cider vinegar
* 4 sheets of nori
* 1 carrot, julienned
* Section of zucchini, julienned
* 1 mushroom, sliced
* 1 Tbsp tamari (or soy sauce)
* 1 green onion, sliced lengthwise
Vegetarian Sushi Equipment
You'll find things much easier if you get a sushi rolling mat, although it isn't necessary. There are kits with a lot of fancy stuff that are expensive, but you can find a rolling mat individually for a few dollars. There should be some in a grocery store or a Chinese food store.
Vegetarian Sushi Recipe Directions
1. Before you start, cook the rice by bringing 2 cups of lightly salted water to a boil, adding the rice and then turning it down to simmer for 45 minutes. In place of white sushi rice, the short grain brown rice is sticky enough but has more nutrients than white. Long grain brown rice will not work. Stir in a tablespoon or two of vinegar, so that the rice sticks to itself, and let it cool.
2. The mushrooms need to be started ahead of time as well. Place the slices in a container with a lid that seals, then add a pinch of sea salt and about a tablespoon of tamari, seal the container and shake. Leave the mushrooms for about an hour, and they will become soft. The excess tamari needs to be squeezed off the mushrooms, since it will seep through your sushi roll and make things too moist.
3. Lay a nori sheet out on the rolling mat, with the grooves in the nori parallel to the direction you're facing.
4. Spread rice onto the nori sheet, leaving a gap on the back edge to seal the roll. Lay a small amount of vegetables in a row on the edge of the sheet closest to you, perpendicular to the direction you are facing. Roll the sheet around that row of vegetables. You'll need to press tightly backwards (to you), and slightly down onto the roll. Don't squish it, but the roll should be tight. Take the rolling mat out a bit so that you don't roll it into the sushi, and continue rolling tightly until you get to the end of the nori, where the gap was left to seal the roll closed.
5. Letting the sushi roll sit a few minutes allows the nori to soften from the moisture in the rice. Once it's ready, cut the roll into slices and you now have created the perfect vegetarian sushi recipe. The common accompaniments are a dipping bowl of tamari, pickled ginger and wasabi.

How to Make Cheap Pizza - A Guide for Bachelors, Dads and Students
If you would like to make something other than the standard cup of noodles, try cheap pizza.
It's easy, requires few ingredients you don't already have around, and can be fun for the kids.
I make my own cheap pizza using a slice of bread for the crust. After all, you probably already have part of a loaf of bread in the house.
For the toppings, you need tomato sauce or catchup if you don't have the sauce, some cheese, and some hamburger, chicken breast or sausage. If you have some pepperoni or olives you can slice up or spinach you can shred, then you have the makings of a gourmet cheap pizza.
Here's the steps to make the pizza:
1. Cook the meat first. If hamburger, then crumble it up and cook it in a skillet, stirring it around to avoid large clumps. Be sure to drain the grease.
For sausage, just cook it according to the directions, then cut it into small chunks, about 1/2" or smaller.
For chicken, you can broil it, bake it, or microwave it. Just make sure it's completely cooked, then slice it into small 1/2" size pieces.
I've also made cheap pizza using boiled or cocktail shrimp. Try it, it's good.
2. Slice the olives into thin slices. Shred the spinach. Do the same with what ever other ingredients you may have. Just use enough for however many pieces you plan to make.
3. Lightly toast the bread, just until it gets firm enough that the toppings won't soak in right away. If you have feta cheese you can put a layer on the bread and let it melt slightly. Skip the next step if using feta cheese.
4. Put a single slice of cheese on the toast. It's best if it is not frozen, but is already close to room temperature.
5. A can of cooked tomato sauce can be used, by putting a tablespoon full or two on top of the cheese and smearing it around. No sauce? Then use a small amount of catchup instead.
6. Add your toppings, but don't put them on too thick.
7. Put the whole thing into a toaster oven and cook for a minute or two until the cheese has melted, and the crust is starting to turn brown.
8. Serve, and put on a movie for the kids to watch while eating. Something funny is best.
Be sure to experiment. Sometimes I use multi-grain bread, sometimes I add some spices to the mix. In any case, it's easy to make different kinds for all tastes which is great if you are feeding a herd of kids.

What to Do With Leftover Roasted Chicken Or Pork?
Now that you are using your grill to roast chicken or pork you are Probably wondering what else you can make with the leftovers.
Well, here's a wonderful way to use them up and please the crowd!
Start by sauteing some onion in about a tablespoon of olive oil. Then pull the Meat from the bone and put it in the pot. Add some fresh ground black pepper and pour Just add enough chicken stock or broth over it to just cover it. Add some chopped fresh Cilantro and the juice of one fresh lime. Simmer the meat for at least an hour, adding some more broth/stock as needed. Don't let it get too dry.
While you are waiting for the meat to simmer, you can start fixing the rest of your meal.
Here's a recipe for red salsa (known as Pico de Gallo) that is simple, fresh and very tasty.
6 plum tomatoes
1 small onion
Fresh cilantro
Lime juice
Jalapeno peppers (either fresh or out of a jar) Optional
Chop the tomatoes and the onion very fine. Add chopped cilantro, lime juice and jalapeno (if using).
You can also make some homemade guacamole to go with this meal.
2 ripe avocados (not so ripe that they are mushy. Just ripe enough to feel a little soft)
cup chopped onion
Chili powder, cumin, fresh ground black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper (only use about a tsp. of each)
Lime juice (about 2 limes)
Fresh cilantro
Cut open avocados and scoop the inside out with a spoon or you can peal them if they aren't too ripe and put the insides in a bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mash with a fork until desired consistency. We like it a bit lumpy.
Once the meat is ready you can heat a tsp. of canola oil in a frying pan and heat some corn tortillas. Grab some meat out of the pot with a pair of tongs and put it in the tortilla. Add some grated cheese (cheddar or pepper jack) and then top with fresh guacamole and salsa!
You can add more toppings if desired:
chopped black olives, chopped jalapenos, sour cream
Get creative! Just remember "Fresh is Best!"

Plenty of choice in Italian food
Italy is a great country that we all know for its culture and history, but even more for its amazing food and delicious wines.
With pizzas and pastas among the type of food probably the most eaten in the world, there is plenty of other dishes and Italian delicatessen to discover. Like in most countries, you will find particular types of food depending on the region of Italy.
An Italian meal would probably be not perfect if it was not enjoyed with some great Italian wine.
We will not talk about Pinot Grigio here. According to a lot of Italian, Pinot Grigio is not the best wine, and Italy has much better to offer. With grapes and styles varying a lot between the South and the North, Italian wines offer a very wide choice. And for those who are crazy about bubbles, Italy offers various sparkling wines and the famous Prosecco. Basically, you can find a type of wine for every type of food from the appetizers to the dessert.
Speaking of desserts, we all know about the tiramisu which is surely one of the most well known Italian desserts. But this desert originating from Treviso is not the only desert you can find in Italy. Panettone is also another well known desert but this one is usually eaten around Easter or Christmas.
It would take too long to make a list of all the existing Italian desserts, but there is enough choice to please everybody, whether you like ice cream, apples made desserts or chocolate made desserts.
The best way to end an Italian meal is with an Italian style coffee. The espresso is very popular around the world and even more in its country of origin, Italy.
There is so much good food and so many different recipes in Italian cuisine that it would really be a shame to only stop to pizzas, pasta and tiramisu. It is true that those dishes are delicious, but there are so many other recipes and dishes to be discovered.
As Italian food is so popular in the United Kingdom, we have seen plenty of specialized shops opening over the past ten or twenty years and a lot of these shops now have Italian food shop websites with Italian food delivery options. Food gifts and food hampers have become very popular and are surely one type of gift that will please a lot of people throughout the year.

Easy Vegetarian Crock Pot Recipes
Since the slow cooker is on average considered to be a tool for preparing beef casserole, chicken stew and not much else, it might flabbergast you to know that you can make really appetizing vegetarian meals in there too. Crockpot cooking is really accessible and you usually just have to add some ingredients, turn the crock pot on, and leave it to cook for a few hours.
If you want a healthy and heavenly home-cooked meal without having to put in much effort, a slow cooker might be the perfect solution. Many meals cooked in there are healthier than their stovetop counterparts are because you do not need to add butter or oil to slow cooker recipes. Sometimes you need to saute some ingredients first but you can use spray oil to keep the calorie count down.
You won't need meat one bit!
There are vegetarian crockpot recipes and there are also ones which have been revised especially for the crockpot or which you can adapt yourself. Some times you might just want to make chili con carne, but a vegetarian guest is over, and being a good host you want to make dinner that will suit everyone's tastes, how do you deal with that? instead of adding meat you can substitute it by adding tofu or TVP instead, for a meat-free version of this good-tasting and classic dish.
Alternatively, you could leave the meat substitutes out altogether and just include plenty of beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, spices and onions for a very healthy and hearty meal. Chili recipes normally freeze well so make plenty and you can freeze the leftovers and use it to spice up other dishes.
Stuffed bell peppers are delicious no matter what you stuff them with. Try a mixture of diced vegetables, rice and tomato sauce. The crockpot encourages the flavors to develop better than when you bake the dish. You can use a barley or rice filling to make cabbage rolls too.
Ethnic and International Foods
Spaghetti sauce is another good idea for a slow cooker dish because it tastes nicer after a long cooking time. Saute the diced vegetables in oil and then put them in the slow cooker with the other ingredients.
You can use bell pepper, onions, mushrooms, carrots or anything else you fancy to make this classic Italian dish. If you want to use zucchini it is best to add it in the final half an hour of slow cooking time else they will go mushy. The same is true about potatoes although these do not usually feature in pasta sauce recipes.
Indian curries are often slowly cooked gently over a low heat for hours, making them suitable for slow cooking. Potato and cauliflower curry is a favorite for vegetarians. You can add some coconut milk or cream at the end to make the curry richer. Spices like garam masala, cumin, and turmeric are great in homemade curries and tomatoes, garlic, and onion are other popular ingredients.
Dal is also nice and this is an Indian lentil dish. You need to simmer lentils, onions, turmeric, water, cayenne pepper, and salt in the slow cooker for a few hours until the mixture is tender and aromatic and then serve it alongside your favorite curry or Indian dish.
There are a lot of crockpot recipes where you can substitute vegetables, beans, or another kind of protein for the meat and even though the finished dish will lack the consistency of the original meat recipe, in many cases the flavor is comparable or even better.

Give something different as a gift by giving Speciality Foods.
How many fruit baskets have you sent or received during the past holidays or on past birthdays? I find that specialty foods easily surpass the traditional gifts and are some of the best gifts given or received for three reasons: they're unique, there's a wide range of choices, and they're tasty! During the next holiday season or for any gift-giving occasion, it will serve you well to remember that everyone appreciates receiving a specialty food gift.
Nobody wants to be known as having sent a gift that is a repeat gift, or that when you see it arrive, and see who it's from, you know exactly what is inside. I know that when I see a specific fruit basket arrive each year on our doorstep, I know precisely who it's from, and I know exactly what I'm going to do with most of the contents, and that is turn it into a quick fruit salad and be done with it. That same distinct lack of variety can rub off onto you as the gift giver.
The distinctiveness of a specialty food gift is in the variety. A specialty food gift once upon a time meant something from the international food section of your local grocery store. Today, it can mean anything from a set of exotic teas and candles to different fruit jams, to the most exceptional noshes you could possibly imagine, each for the discerning or curious palette.
The word choice refers to a variety of things, and specialty food lets you avail yourself of not only several different choices of one type of item, such as nuts, but allows you to pick and choose, say nuts and fruit, or nuts and candy, or even exotic items like chocolate caramel treats imported from Europe. And there is variety even in the most simple of items like jams, featuring not only your normal pear jam, but also a red pepper jam that will serve as a key component to a great appetizer.
The sure way to anyone's heart is through their stomach, and this is never so true as with specialty foods. Often a memorable component of any cocktail hour, many of these items are not of the sweet and salty dessert classification, but rather of the antipasti tradition. A sure way to make an indelible impression is to be sure you are remembered as someone enjoys the delectable hors d'oeuvre you helped to provide.
One of the best specialty foods gifts I ever received was chocolate covered fruit, but fruit that you wouldn't expect to be chocolate covered. These were being cherries and blueberries, dried, and coated in chocolate, creating such a unique flavour combination, but yet so satisfying that your five fruits a day allowance didn't seem so hard to meet after you sampled some of these treats.
When you give a gift, you want it to be memorable, enjoyable, and something that the will actually surprise the recipient. As in the Japanese tradition,a gift itself should be equalled only by the way the gift is put together, or presented. A specialty food serves that purpose well, and ensures that not only the gift itself, but the way it arrives, and the presentation of the gift itself are an experience that the receiver will find indelible.
